ABOUT

Heather Peters is an artist and writer living in Los Angeles whose work explores the ideas of time, ecology, and materiality through an investigation into the historical, physical and scientific nature of art materials, working with time-based materials such a hand-bound books, handmade paper, chromatography, video and cyanotype, she creates immersive and interactive pieces. The often technical and material based process decides the outcome of her pieces, which are not passive but speak to the history of information and the physical experience by incorporating painting, writing, and movable paper and book structures, and sculptural installations. Her work uses the art making practice to create a trail that leads to a finished product containing the elements of the process in the way that geology can be un-teased to provide a map of time.

She studied illustration at Art Center College of Design, and received a dual-thesis masters in Creative Writing and Book Art from Mills College in Oakland, California, and has held teaching appointments at San Diego State University and Occidental College. In 2017 she opened Society of Hermits, a fine art and hand papermaking studio where she teaching workshops, collaborates with artists, and develops her own work. Her artist books can be found at UC Berkeley Environmental Design Library, Scripps College, UC Irvine, Maggs Brothers in London, Occidental College, and The Letterform Archive.
